Requirements: Weekly reading assignments will be given along with worksheets designed to emphasize the reflection of later scripture writers on earlier scripture texts. The reading assignments will include excerpts from books and scholarly articles, in addition to select passages from Scripture. Grades will be determined by the completion of these worksheets. Internet access is essential. Copies will be kept at a minimum. Course notes will be posted to the web site (www.sacrapagina.com). Please check the site weekly for the notes before coming to class. If there are any special topics you would like to discuss, please let me know.
Course Description: This two-part course will introduce ministers-in-training (MITs) to basic research methods and outlining skills necessary to develop effective bible study lesson plans and sermon outlines. Enrollment is limited to MITs designated by Senior Pastor W. Lonnie Herndon.
Upon completion of the course the student will have a knowledge of basic research resources for bible lesson and sermon preparation.
Upon completion of the course the student will be familiar with basic research methods for bible lesson and sermon preparation.
Upon completion of the course the student will be familiar with basic notetaking methods and skills.
Upon completion of the course the student will be familiar with the basic elements which contribute to an effective lesson or sermon presentation.
Upon completion of the course the student will be familiar with basic outlining approaches and skills.
Upon completion of the course the student will have prepared at least one Bible lesson plan and one sermon outline for inspection by the Senior Pastor.
It is imperative that we put into practice the things we will be learning. These skills, tools, and methods we will be learning must be integrated into your daily/weekly routine of preparing Bible lessons and sermons Homework assignments will be designed to accomplish these objectives. It is imperative to complete the assignments when they are given because how and when you complete them demonstrate the extent to which you will go to integrate these methods and principles into your ministry preparation. Each student will be given an opportunity to present, to discuss, and to critique his or her ministry preparation, lessons, and sermons before his/her peers.
Most of us are not born with the skill/ability of teaching, public speaking, and preaching. Rather, these skills must be learned and practiced. There are essential steps in lesson and sermon preparation. This class is an opportunity to discuss your fears, apprehensions, challenges, misconceptions, failures, weakness, strengthens, skills, and experiences of success when it comes to the preparation of lessons and sermons. This course does not promise to overcome all of our shortcomings, but rather to begin together the process of focusing our attention on learning and putting into practice essential skills and methods for lesson and sermon preparation
Two weeks will be given for each course objective. During class one, we will cover the topic. Between week one and week two, you will be required to complete a corresponding homework assignment. During the second class, we will discuss the assignment. When appropriate we will listen to sermons and watch classroom lectures.
